Energy Management System FAQ

Question:  Will the Energy Management Software work with my Ethernet Network?

Answer: Yes, both the data acquisition and reporting side of the system support Ethernet Communications.  Multiple users can have access to the system provided they are on the Network and have permission to do so.  The system can even be accessed from home by authorized staff.

Question:  How does the software get data from the Utility Meter?

Answer:  There are two primary ways which we get data from the Utility Meter.  The meter can be equipped to provide a pulse output which is then brought into a data accumulator unit which in turn is connected to the computer via Ethernet or RS-422 instrument cable.  If the meter has Ethernet capability, the meter can be dropped onto the Ethernet Network and our Software will poll it directly.

Question:  How does the System curtail electricity load?

Answer:  Loads that are to be curtailed are chosen when planning the implementation of the system into your facility.  Loads that can be curtailed are assigned a priority so that more important loads are shed last.  There are several ways to interface the control output to the actual load.  First, the load can be directly controlled using a relay.  Second, the load can be controlled via a PLC, in this scenario we provide an output which is read into the PLC as an input, when the input is on, the PLC can then take the necessary steps to reduce the assigned load.  Lastly, where applicable, an 4-20ma interface can be provided which can be wired into the power supply of certain loads.  For companies that prefer to shed load manually, we can provide a series of lights and buzzers which will indicate when load should be shed.

Question:  Can I check my Electricity Bill with this system?

Answer:  Yes, the Software has a built in, configurable bill generator.  At the end of the billing period, a bill can be produced which can be directly compared to the Utility Bill.  Should a dispute arise, you will have 1 minute consumption data to work with in order to resolve the dispute.  Data from our Systems has been used to bill customers when due to technical difficulties, the Utility have lost meter data for one reason or another.

Question:  Can I view profiles from multiple meters on the System?

Answer:  Yes, the Software provides the ability to view multiple meter profiles AND grouped meter profiles at the same time.  Over a selected timeline it is easy to see how loads compare and interact with each other.  With the monitoring of sub-metered loads, you'll be able to see how loads stack at various times to create coincidental peak demand.

Question:  I have sub-meters from several Manufacturers, can I bring them into your System?

Answer:  Yes, as long as the meter supports the Modbus protocol it can usually be incorporated into the system.  Each Modbus enabled meter should be connected to the Facility Ethernet Network and have it's own IP Address.  Data is collected from these meters at 1 minute intervals.
